Our club, the St. Louis Community and the world lost a good friend and Rotarian a week ago.  Terry Baer, Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Clayton-Ladue, passed away much too early at the age of 61 after a courageous battle following heart surgery.

A selfless volunteer, Terry contributed to our club in nearly every capacity possible as an officer, committee leader and eventually, club President.   Old Newsboys Day?  He was the first to arrive, and the last to leave.  Need help shepherding a new member into the fold?  Terry would be the first to raise his hand and participate.  Fundraising through our annual dinner or gala?  He was a fixture in our meetings, event planning and beyond.

Terry was a faithful attendee to our regular Wednesday lunches in addition to everything he did behind the scenes.  Over the years, he paid more than his share of “Happy Dollars” to highlight his son Jonathan’s accomplishments at MICDS and then SMU.  When he spoke of Mimi, his wife, you could tell the genuine and deep love he felt for her.

Terry was never one to shy away from a question.  Over the years, he would pay close attention to the speakers we hosted and never failed to come away with either a relevant point or thought-provoking inquiry.  He would smile often, laugh unforgettably and never speak ill of anyone else.  His friendliness was sincere and unassuming, his character and actions always in the best interest of others.

We will always remember him fondly.  Our club will keep Mimi, Jonathan and the extended Baer family (which his brother in S. America detailed so vividly and humorously at his memorial service through a heart-warming letter read by a friend) in our thoughts and prayers.

Rest in peace, Terry.  The Rotary world misses you greatly.
